Diet drinks can have a negative effect on brain health

Dr. Annie Penn, a doctor, culinary instructor, and founder of Brain Health Kitchen, said regular consumption of diet soda can have harmful effects on short- and long-term brain health.

“I will introduce the most compelling study ever published in the journal Stroke. Researchers at Boston University analyzed the drinking habits of more than 4,000 healthy participants between 1998 and 2011. Men and women who drink diet soda were 2.89 times more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and 2.96 times more strokes than those who did not, according to studies on disruption factors such as age, gender, education, calorie intake, diet quality, physical activity, and smoking.

He added that the results showed that the risk increased with each diet soda intake.
Diet soda makes blood sugar stabilization difficult

A study published in August found that the artificial sweeteners sucralose and saccharin can interfere with the body’s insulin response.

“If insulin reactions are repeated several times a day over the years, it can cause insulin resistance,” Penn said. “This means that the target organ (such as the brain) is no longer responding to insulin.” Glucose moves freely in the bloodstream, creating inflammatory particles that penetrate across the blood-brain barrier and damage small blood vessels, he explained.
