Why is a woman in her 20s desperate?
This means that women in their 20s are in the most desperate situation in our society. This means that socioeconomic and mental stress is at risk.
First of all, as the economic downturn is prolonged, the job problem, which is the core of economic independence, seems to be serious. Women in their 20s, who have just begun social life, have fewer employment opportunities than men, and even when they get a job, the proportion of non-regular service industries with relatively low wage levels is high.
Therefore, it is highly likely that women in their 20s were hit the most by COVID-19 that hit our society last year.
According to social statistics from the National Statistical Office in 2020, “economic difficulties” (21.5%) were the most common reasons for suicidal thoughts among young women, followed by “work problems such as unemployment and unemployment” (18.5%), family discord (15.6%), “loneliness (14.1%), physical and mental illness (12.1%).
Park Sun-young, a professor of psychiatry at Ilsan Hospital of National Health Insurance, said, “If it becomes socially and economically difficult, the vulnerable with the weakest foundation will be hit first.”
Professor Baek Jong-woo said, “For women in their 20s, employment stress is relatively serious, expectations for gender equality have risen, but reality has not kept up, and various problems such as trauma from not receiving proper protection or mental treatment have increased.”
Lee Yeo-bong, a professor of liberal arts at Gangnam University, pointed out, “Although the labor market has improved, there are still many cases of preferring men under the same conditions and capabilities,” adding, “As a result, it is pushed to low-wage jobs, which increases economic activity and housing instability.”
Kwon Geum-joo, a psychology professor at Seoul National University, said, “Although we have improved a lot compared to the past, our society still has a lot of remnants of the patriarchal order centered on men, and the walls facing young women in economic independence, marriage, and childcare issues are high.
“We need to increase access to the economic and mental support system.”
