KB: What makes you wanted to sell Watermelon In Vietnam Shirtless? Are you attention seekers?
LW: I do not understand much about Vietnamese culture, so when the Lunar New Year approached, seeing many watermelon sellers everywhere in Saigon made me wonder. After that, I asked one of my students to tell about the story of Mai An Tiem, a legendary hero from ancient times in Vietnam, who discovered and planted the first watermelon for the Vietnamese.
According to legend, Mai was the adopted son of the king. Due to his refusal to accept the gifts that were lavished upon him as he did not wish to feel indebted, Mai and his family were banished to a deserted island. It was on this island that Mai found watermelons that he brought back to mainland Vietnam.
Upon hearing of Mai’s survival and successful watermelon business, the king forgave him and allowed him and his family to return to the kingdom. When researching, I love this story and also really like the image of Mai An Tiem.
To Vietnamese, the red watermelon represents luck, the main character in the story has courage, assertiveness, resilience, and dare to think and dare. This is similar to fitness, also need those characteristics to be successful.
The story gave me great inspiration, and I & my team decided to take a photoshoot to inspired people to take care of health: Live Healthy, Beautiful, Positive. The vibrant orange loincloth is traditional costume as Mai An Tiêm – Vietnamese legendary hero
